What is the building in the rock from 1480's or so used for? Or is it even used? I wasn't quite sure what is what. There are the stairs you and Herrmann are on and there is a long stairway, I think made of stone, that you are standing on that looks like it has a tunnel at the top. I can't quite figure out if it is all of that building that is built in the rock. Pat

Pat, I'm sorry my description wasn't plain enough.

The building in the mountain is a church "Kirche"in German. On the post the word is attached to Felsen which is the name of it and I think means precious stone.

Yes, it is still in use for services. As I mentioned Herrmann preaches there about once a month.

The tunnel is the entrance to the church. It is in the rock outside the original church but connected to it at the top of the tunnel,I think.

The church is a major tourist attraction of the area and brings in lots of money for this reason. I think that the "curator" let us in free as guests of the pastor.

The other buildings you see behind the railing are houses built on the side of the mountain. Can you imagine climbing all the way up there and carrying everything you need for living there; including furniture and appliances.

Herrmann said that there used to be a road up to the church but it isn't kept in repair and there is no place to park.

At one time hundreds of years ago there was a castle on the peak of the mountain where the church is -now it is mostly in ruins. There is another large castle on the next peak but we didn't get to visit it. I have some good pictures of the area in a book that Herrmann gave us but we didn't take such good ones on our camera.

I remembered you talking about this couple during our visit at camp this summer but I had no idea of the unique area you went to church!
